Our calling and our promise

Providence Health & Services has been serving the needs of our communities in Oregon and Washington for 160 years. Through innovative partnerships with community-focused organizations, Providence reaches far beyond the clinical setting to serve the needs of today, while transforming conditions for a better tomorrow. Beyond just the need for free and discounted care, community benefit investments play a vital role in our work to create healthier communities.

In 2015, Providence invested more than $225 million in community benefit across Oregon. Through these investments, Providence is ensuring care for our most vulnerable communities, addressing childhood hunger and supporting access to oral health services. Charity care, which includes free and reduced-cost care for individuals who are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to pay is an important component of our community benefit as well. Although lower in recent years due to more individuals having access to health coverage through the Affordable Care Act, our total charity care remains high at more than $43 million in 2015.

As we move forward, our commitment to creating healthier communities reflects our history of caring for our neighbors in the communities we serve. Together, with our community partners, we assess where the greatest unmet needs are through a formal community health needs assessment. These include:

  • Access to preventive and primary care
  • Mental health and substance use services
  • Chronic conditions prevention and management
  • Oral health services
In this report, you’ll see examples of how we are working to meet these needs. You’ll also hear about our work to keep people healthier. It is our privilege to serve people throughout Oregon and southwest Washington.
